[Case Study] The Online Marketing One-Two Punch
By Amanda Gagnon January 9, 2014
Electronica Life’s Christian Alva faced a problem many online businesses encounter: lots of work for little growth. He was frustrated that after 18 months of hard work and dedication, all he had to show for it was 4,000 subscribers.
That’s when he decided to try contests with the help of a service called Contest Domination. Christian integrated this service with his email marketing efforts in AWeber.
Now, Electronica Life has over 10,000 subscribers, sponsors seeking him out, plus 28,000 Facebook fans… and they are still growing fast. So how exactly did this happen?
The Allure of Contests
People love contests. Who doesn’t like the idea of winning cool prizes? It makes sense that running a contest is a great way to get people engaged with your business, and Christian realized this.
“Even before we totally had things figured out, we immediately saw huge growth by implementing contests into our marketing mix. What used to take us months to achieve, now took days and a lot less effort,” said Christian on Prospect Domination’s website.
After just five months of using Contest Domination with AWeber, subscribers doubled.
Nurture New Leads With Email
Contests can get your business attention, but how do you follow up with these leads?
Christian believes email is the perfect solution because:
- There’s a high incentive to provide a good email address. People will want to know if they win! This means you have their attention.
- You can send them something right away. Participants will appreciate knowing their entry was successful, and a welcome email can do just that.
- You can set up autoresponders, emails that will send out automatically at the intervals you designate. Build up anticipation to the contest deadline or show them the awesome content you have to offer in your emails (just make sure participants know you’ll be sending to them regularly). Christian sends out information about upcoming shows, contests and other news.
- Open and click-through reports show you what people like. Christian also likes split testing his broadcasts to find what subject line gets the most opens.
Want Your Own Contest? Here’s the App
Turn on the Contest Domination app in an AWeber account, and you’ll automatically pull in subscribers directly from your contest registration form.

Hello. I think this article is okay, but details on implementing is what I thought this would offer. This page tells me about the idea, but just seems to want me to buy something – thats not what I came here for.
Also, can you start doing videos? I don’t have time to read while at work, but I can listen. Anyways, videos and vlogging are the future.

Gidon – +1!
Lisa – The guide is free and has the details. It’s downloadable to be accessible anywhere, whether you’re online or not, but it’s free. It’s right here.
We make many videos; here are our YouTube channel. Happy to have you watch and listen!
