We recently chatted with Michael Stelzner, founder of Social Media Examiner, during our monthly #AWeberHour Twitter Chat.

Michael shared tips on using social media and email to launch a business or product. Here are 4 things I learned about launching a business using social media and email marketing.

1. Produce great content and give it away

In the first year of business, Social Media Examiner brought in $1.7 million. The key to that growth, Michael says, was bringing together like-minded people around a common cause – produce great content that people will share and give it away.

Great content solves a real need or problem people have. First, determine your ideal readers or prospects. Next, learn what their needs are. Survey them. And don’t forget to regularly take a pulse of your customers and fans to make sure you’re still providing the value they’re looking for.

Ebooks, reports and videos are great examples of free content you can provide. But to work right, they should be tailored to your ideal audience.

 

2. Cage your marketing for when you need it

Let’s face it, no one likes being sold to, so don’t start pitching and selling the moment your start your business. Instead, provide as much value as possible. This is what attracts people to your content (and your business) and encourages them to share it with others.

A good practice is to shine the light on your customers and fans. You need to give them love if you want them to love you. Only pitch after you have critical mass that will not slow you down.

 

3. Invest in building your audience

Starting a business is one thing. Building and growing it is entirely another.

You must first have an audience before you can grow your business, so think of building your audience as your greatest investment. If you don’t first invest in it, you’ll have to pay someone else who already has (e.g., Facebook and Google).

Always try to grow your list with everything you do because it is something you own. Have an email sign-up form all over your website and on your social media pages. Your call to action should encourage people to sign up for your email newsletter to get free content.

 

4. Email and social together is magic

Use social media and email to make it easy for people to share your content. Email your content to your subscribers and encourage them to share it by creating a tweet using ClickToTweet and embedding it in your email. Put quotes in your emails with a link that says “Click here to tweet quote.” And check out how Social Media Examiner grew its email list by 234% using social and email together.
